ASA Format

The ASA format is one of the most widely accepted and used academic formatting styles in doing sociology assignments. The ASA citation format gives clear instructions on how to style your citations, paragraphs, footnotes, punctuations, and text. As a sociology student, you should be versed in this style so that you can write your assignments within the stipulated formatting rules of your course. This article shows you all that you need to know to become proficient in its usage.

Title Page

When using ASA formatting, incorporate a separate title page. The ASA title page should contain the following component:

  • The title of the paper
  • The names of authors and their respective institutions
  • The total number of words in the paper

The inclusion of the abstract is not a mandatory. But when necessary, put it on its own page, coming after the title page with the title of the manuscript as the main heading.

The abstract should be around 200 words but not more.

Also, include any keyword that you deem necessary to help your readers to spot the main ideas in your document.

Text Formatting

Another area to pay attention to is text formatting. Use a 12-point font size and double space it. But if your lecturer specifies anything else, go by that instruction.

Your margins ought to be 1 and ¼” on every side. But if your supervisor advises otherwise, follow their instructions.

Your initial page

The opening page of your document has to begin with a title and should be located on the page that follows the title page and abstract.

If your paper features many sections, give every individual section its separate title. The use of subtitles is going to keep your paper organized. The subtitles come in three main categories, and this is how you need to structure them:

  • Level one heading

You have to write all of it in uppercase and align it to the left but without bolding the font.

  • Level two heading

Use italicized fonts and align it to the left but capitalize the first letter only. Don’t use bolded fonts.

  • Level three heading

These types of heading need the use of italicized fonts. Also, align them to the left without bolding them. You need to capitalize the first letter of the initial word alone.

When using ASA citation, use quotes that are less than three lines within the text, but within question marks. If your quoted words have grammar errors, you can correct them and say so in brackets. But if you choose to use them the way they are, then follow them with a sic notation to tell the readers that you found them that way. Additionally, you need to ensure that you include all the works you have cited in your ASA reference page. When you decide to rephrase an original idea, use an in-text citation.

Footnotes and Endnotes

Under the ASA style guide, it is not a must for you to use footnotes and endnotes. But when it is unavoidable for you to do so, you need to adhere to the following rules:

  • Number all of them correctly using the Arabic script
  • Place footnotes at the bottom of each page in small fonts
  • Place your end notes at the end of your text followed by the bibliography
  • Don’t use more than one style when making your footnotes and endnotes but avoid using them for your usual quotations
  • Use footnotes in the citation of rare materials and expound on texts

How to number your pages

You need to number all your pages using the Arabic script.

Numbering your tables and figures

You also need to number all your figures and tables in the order of their appearance using Arabic numbers. You should indicate which figure or table is number 1, 2, or 3.

When presenting tables, provide complete titles for all columns and rows in full wordings (avoid abbreviating). Likewise, place all tables and figures on separate pages at the end of your document accompanied with titles that describe what they are about.

Works cited

Lastly, you need to create an ASA bibliography so that you can show your readers the sources of all the works your referenced. You have to indicate which articles, book sections, websites, and journals you quoted so as to avoid plagiarism.
