How much technology do we use in our lives

Technology has become an integral part of human lives, and it continues to expand its outreach to a larger number of public and private domains with new products and convenient versions of familiar items (Wahl, Schneidt, & Windley, 2003). Though it is an indispensable part of the contemporary world and there are hardly any individuals imagining their daily routines without smart devices, the public still voices concerns about over-reliance on technology. Hence, it is vital to understand what role technology plays in the modern social and private lives of individuals, and how it affects people on an individual level.

There is hardly any doubt that the third millennium is ushered by advanced technology; modern people’s lives have become faster and more convenient due to the enormous number of smart devices and technologies emerging recently to change human routines. With the advent of the Internet, communication changed forever, and it is now instant and varied (Daily Alert, 2013). Mobile technology development has enabled people to stay connected wherever they are, while social networking allows sharing of news, content, and media less than in a second. Thus, the global community is now living convenient lives full of smart devices meant to make their lives easier and more comfortable.

However, there are some negative consequences of such massive, rapid, and even uncontrolled spread of technology. For instance, because of being closely wired, and individual lives are no longer private, being posted and discussed online (Human Kinetics, 2017). Moreover, human communication is suffering from a lack of the face-to-face, humane component, and users prefer staying online to a sincere person talk. Finally, the issues of privacy are seriously compromised with so much online visibility, which may also create unnecessary pressure on individuals (Ramey, 2012).

It is also noteworthy that the level of technology adoption depends on its perceived utility; thus, people who do not feel comfortable with technology and have conservative views about their daily activities are less likely to embrace high-tech devices. Young people, on the contrary, are much more tech-savvy because they have been growing up surrounded with technology (Berleur, Clement, Sizer, & Whitehouse, 2013). As a result, technologies seem to produce a much more pronounced impact on young people’s lives than it does on older generations, which also contributes to the widening generation gap.
